Overview

Purpose:

People credited with this unit standard are able to:

· Recognise and manage a range of emergencies according to the prescribed protocols

· Render basic First Aid to the community even if the required resources have to be improvised.

 

Content:

Emergency scene management, treatment for fractures, burns, lacerations, difficulty with breathing, severe haemorrhage, head injuries, spinal injuries, level of consciousness, strains and sprains.  First aid procedures in life-threatening situations e.g. Cardio-Pulmonary arrest; cessation of breathing; severe haemorrhage

 

Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of emergency scene management.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of elementary anatomy and physiology.
  3. Assess an emergency situation
  4. Apply First Aid procedures to the life-threatening situation
  5. Treat common injuries
